Avriel Shull -- finally the beginnings of a database

I've been tracking Avriel Shull for many years now. I am finally getting my files organized.  Here is the beginning of a database of Avriel Shull designed buildings.  I still have many to add from my own collection of notes, but thought it would be fun to let you all have a gander at what I'm doing.  I wrote the National Register of Historic Places nomination for Thornhurst Historic District, where there are 21 additional Avriel-designed homes, and I have records on a dozen others still to add.  If you know of an Avriel design that I don't have here, please drop me a note at connie@cresourcesinc with an address and a photo if you have one.  If not, I'll be happy to hop over and snap one.  Also, I know Avriel worked in states other than Indiana, I'd love to get photos of those buildings.  Check back, I'll be updating this page as time allows.  All materials copyright C. Resources unless otherwise cited.

  1. We need to chat. I have several more of these. 171 E. 71st is an O.C. Winters, BTW

    1. Thanks for that head's up, Joe. I've removed the 171 E. 71st St house. I bet Avriel lost that commission to O.C. Winters. I'm going to keep updating this info as I have time so I'd love to add in any pics you may have.

  2. Very excited that you're doing this--to me this ranks as one of the biggest missed-opportunity selling points of Indy, though, thanks to you and a few other proponents out there, we're finally discovering (or rediscovering) those opportunities that were dormant for so long! The south side might not have any Shull-designed homes, but here and there you will see the obvious inspiration.

  3. Thanks, AD! I wouldn't be surprised if Avriel had a house or two on the southside of Indianapolis, but I don't have any record of it, if any exist.

  4. We live in an Avriel Shull in Marne, MI. The design was on the cover of 200 most popular home plans (1978) book although I've been hard pressed to find other pics of the same design. It's gorgeous - wooded 7 acre parcel - the perfect setting for it. If you want pics let me know. We bought in 2011 and have been redecorating/updating in a vintage industrial style - suits very well.

  5. I am looking at 6007 Crow's Nest. I think you have it as 6002? I'd like to track down original blueprints for restoration. Can you help?

  9. I own a 1,400 sq ft mid century home north of Butler. I'm just starting to look for information on who designed it as I renovate. Great blog post!
